Master’s student Freddy Ordonez receives two scholarship awards
CEE master’s student receives two scholarships that aim to increase the graduation rate among underrepresented and underserved STEM students.
CEE Master’s student Freddy Ordonez has been selected by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) to receive a scholarship that supports and empowers people of Hispanic or Latino heritage in higher education. Ordonez also received the Chevron Scholarship from Great Minds in Stem (GMiS) which is aimed to increase the graduation rate among underrepresented and underserved STEM students.
The HSF scholarships are designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage to obtain a college degree, especially those who are pursing majors in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. The Chevron Scholarship assists college students from underserved and underrepresented communities that are interested in STEM majors.
Ordonez is currently a Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) in the Environmental Biotechnology Research Group in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. He is working under Professor Lutgarde Raskin and PhD candidate Caroline Van Steendam. They are working on a novel anaerobic membrane bioreactor technology that aims to maximize biofilm growth to treat domestic wastewater at extremely low temperatures.
